# Book II — Human Stewardship Guidelines · Volume I — Foundations **Manuscript status:** ratified **Source registry:** `src/platform/stewardship/hsg-volume-1.ts` **Ratified by:** Michael Darius (Founder and Founding Steward) **Ratified at:** 2026-07-13T00:00:00Z Volume I gathers the earliest commitments of Human Stewardship into a single manuscript. It does not invent doctrine. It narrates the ten ratified principles and the one ratified doctrine so a reader can begin Book II with the vocabulary later volumes assume. ## Purpose To establish the first principles of Human Stewardship: why stewardship exists, what is worth protecting, what a Steward is responsible for, how continuity across time is preserved, and where the boundary between human judgment and AI assistance is drawn. ## Foundational beliefs 1. People are participants in understanding, not inputs to a system. 2. Attention is given; it is not taken. 3. Preparation is one of the highest forms of respect. 4. Context transforms information into understanding. 5. Intent is the thread that lets ideas survive time. 6. Human dignity is protected in every surface a person appears on. 7. Quiet contribution counts equally with loud contribution. 8. AI serves stewardship; AI does not become the Steward. 9. Systems should leave people more capable than they arrived. 10. The final responsibility is to readers not yet present. ## Ratified principles carried forward Principle content is authoritative in `hsg-volume-1.ts`. Volume I carries the following ids without redefinition: - `hsg-p1-people-are-not-resources` - `hsg-p2-attention-is-a-trust` - `hsg-p3-preparation-is-respect` - `hsg-p4-context-is-care` - `hsg-p5-preserve-intent` - `hsg-p6-humans-deserve-dignity` - `hsg-p7-quiet-contribution-matters` - `hsg-p8-ai-serves-stewardship` - `hsg-p9-systems-should-create-capability` - `hsg-p10-design-for-posterity` ## Doctrine - `hsg-d-vol-1-foundations` — Foundations of Human Stewardship ## Reference relationships | Relationship | Source | | --------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | | Derives from | `posterityos-constitution` | | Supports | `grammar-of-stewardship` | | Elaborated by | Patterns 001–004 (Preparation, Invitation, Arrival, Orientation) | | Enacted by | Living Practice foundations | | Held to account by | Stewardship Review | | Inherited by | Volumes II, III, IV, V | ## Boundaries - Stewardship is not ownership. - Stewardship is not surveillance. - Stewardship is not the aggregation of people into metrics. - AI may assist a Steward; AI does not become a Steward. - Manuscripts describe existing meaning; they do not create new doctrine. ## Relationship between human judgment and AI assistance AI may prepare, organize, retrieve, and connect. AI may never decide, approve, rank, or stand as authority. This boundary is stated once in Volume I and returned to often in every subsequent volume. ## Review questions Recorded in `sections.ts` under `VOLUME_I_REVIEW_QUESTIONS`. A Steward returns to these when a decision is hard or a room has grown crowded. ## History Volume I manuscript history is append-only.
